Position Title: Economic Development Officer – Youth Intern

Closing Date: September 10, 2010

Job Description:
The Economic Development Officer – Youth Intern’s responsibilities will include, but are not limited to;
-work with existing and new businesses
-individual clients
-develop and implement youth entrepreneurship programs and services
-research funding opportunities
-assist in the development of business plans and proposals

This is a one year position. Upon successful review, this position may be renewed depending on continued funding.

Qualifications:
- Must be between the ages of 19-35 years old
- University or college graduate with a degree in Economic Development, Business Administration or a related field.
- 3-5 years experience working with First Nations
- Strong leadership, organizational and communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize work
- Experience in identifying funding resources
- Excellent computer skills, especially MS office suite
- knowledge of Mi’kmaq would be an asset

Mi'kmaq Legal Support Network | MLSN Case Worker

Agency: Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network provides justice support services for Aboriginal People in Nova Scotia in conflict with the law. The Program is under the auspices of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.

Term Position: MLSN Mi’kmaq Customary Law Program Case Worker

Term: Ending March 31st, 2011

Location: Covering Millbrook First Nation, Indian Brook, Pictou Landing First Nation, Paq’tenkek First Nation, and surrounding areas.


Specific Requirements:

  • University degree preferred
  • Mi’kmaq language a preferred
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Mi’kmaq culture and communities
  • Knowledge of Mi’kmaq Legal Support Network and other Aboriginal Justice Programs
  • Ability to work with families and youth in crisis
  • Must possess good communication skills and public speaking skills
  • Computer skills required
  • Must posses valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license and have access to a vehicle.
  • Must pass Criminal Record Screening and Child Abuse Register

General Description:

The Case Worker is responsible for case management and delivery of the Mi’kmaq Customary Law Program. This individual must be able to facilitate group discussions and encourage individuals in expressing emotions and feelings. This individual must maintain a strong community focus and be involved in all aspects of MLSN Promotion.

Home and Community Health Care Coordinator

Union of Nova Scotia Indians

     Under the direct supervision of the Health Director of the Union of Nova Scotia Indians, in this position you will be required to work closely with First Nation communities in providing technical suppport to assure the interest of Home and Community Care is effectively represented as to the well-being of all First Nations. Coordinate a system of home and community health and social related services, which would enable people to live in their home environment and achieve their optimal ability.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist First Nations in the development of an awareness strategy for a Home and Community Care program and participate in its implementation.
  • Assist bands capacity in the planning of the HCC program such as, home and community care needs assessments, plans and delievery structures and training plans and job descriptions.
  • Responsible for the monitoring and evaluation of the HCC continuing progress through community visitations, meetins and workshops.
  • Orient bands to the responsibilities and requirements of the contribution agreement for HCC including goals, objectives, financial control and reports.
  • Provide guidance on community development issues and innovative problem solving.
  • Facilitate networking and collaborative training for capacity building and professional development wiht all First Nation home and community care programs.
  • Assist Bands in the development of home and community care projects, coordinate submission of plans for peer review and make recommendations on HCC projects.
  • Analyze and interpret regional, provincial, health, environmental and social trends with a view to contributing to the planning, implementation and evaluation of HCC policies and programs within Atlantic Region.
  • Collaborate on-going communications with key health service personnel for the purpose of program planning, monthly reporting, evaluation or other program issues in the HCC program.
  • Ensure written reports are produced by each project in order to help groups increase their capacity to develop and implement programs and provide information on what has been done with respect to their HCC program

     

Qualifications:

  • A degree in nursing from a Canadian university or a recognized equivalent.
  • Registered nurse in good standing in a Canadian province or territory.
  • Demonstrate expertise in Home and Community Care planning and programming and community devlopment.
  • Knowledge of scope of practice issues, Home and Community Care based programs for diabetes, adult wellness and secondary and tertiary prevention issues.
  • Previous working experience with First Nations and demonstrated understanding of the particular health and social issues encountered and experienced by First Nation and Iniut is desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Computer Literate.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in nursing preferably in the Home and Community Care field.
  • Valid driver's license and willing to travel.
  • Access to reliable vehicle.
